6 Kitchen Backsplash Trends for 2024

Posted by on

When it comes to choosing a new backsplash, learning what backsplash materials, colors, and patterns are on-trend can help inspire your own design choices.

Recent research from Houzz indicates that top materials for kitchen backsplashes in 2024 include porcelain or ceramic; engineered quartz; and marble. Handmade zellige clay tiles are also increasingly popular with designers and homeowners.

Earthy colors like beige, terracotta, and sage green are trending kitchen backsplash colors in 2024.

Kitchen backsplash patterns that are in demand right now include 3D geometric patterns and the vertical stack tile pattern for subway tiles. Other trending subway tile backsplash patterns include double herringbone and basketweave.

Some of our favorite kitchen backsplash trends for 2024 include:

Beige Backsplashes

The 2024 U.S. Houzz Kitchen Trends Study indicates that homeowners are increasingly choosing beige color backsplashes during kitchen remodels. In fact, beige is currently the third most popular color for a kitchen backsplash (after white and gray).

Marble with Dramatic, Bold Veining

According to the 2024 Houzz U.S. Emerging Summer Trends Report, interest in dark and moody home décor is rapidly increasing among U.S. homeowners and interior designers. Searches on the Houzz website for “moody kitchen” are up by 102% year over year.

Some moody kitchen backsplash ideas for 2024 and 2025 include backsplashes in dark, muted shades of blue, black, brown, and green; and natural stone backsplashes with distinctive veining to add drama and movement to your kitchen design. Quartzite and marble are two of the most popular types of natural stone backsplashes for kitchens.

Types of marble that are ideal for a moody kitchen backsplash include bold Calacatta Viola, exquisite Nero Marquina, and classic Carrara white marble. White or light gray marble can provide contrast to a moody kitchen design that features dark cabinets, countertops, and/or wallpaper. A marble backsplash with bold, dramatic veining can also be incorporated into organic modern kitchen designs, which are also trending right now. Organic modern kitchens typically feature soft, earthy colors and natural materials like wood and marble.

Offset Square Tile Pattern Backsplash

Simple square tiles are a timeless kitchen backsplash option.

These days we’re seeing a lot of tiled kitchen backsplashes that feature terracotta or ceramic 4x4, 5x5, and 6x6 tiles in an offset square tile pattern. Also known as running bond, this look is created by arranging square tiles in a staggered layout, with the center of each tile lined up with the end edge of the tile above it. While this pattern is commonly used for subway tiles, you can also lay square tiles in an offset/running bond pattern to create a classic yet updated look that’s perfect for contemporary kitchen designs.

Green Backsplashes

Also a major kitchen design trend of the 1990s, green color backsplashes, cabinets, and wallpaper began to make a comeback in the early 2020s. Green color backsplashes will continue to trend in 2024, according to the most recent Kitchen Trends report published by the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA). While hunter green backsplashes were popular in the ‘90s, trending shades of green for 2024 and beyond include earthy verdant hues like sage green, forest green, and emerald green.

Vertical Offset Subway Tile

While a subway tile kitchen backsplash never goes out of style, there are ways to make this type of backsplash feel especially fresh and contemporary. Some creative and distinctive tile layout patterns that are increasingly being incorporated into kitchen backsplash designs include double herringbone and basketweave subway tile patterns. The vertical stacked offset tile pattern is also rising in popularity.

By stacking your kitchen subway tiles vertically and slightly offset, you’ll achieve an eye-catching contemporary look that can help create the illusion of a taller backsplash and more spacious kitchen. A vertical picket tile backsplash can achieve a similar look (and is also quite popular right now).

Textured Backsplashes

In 2024, 3D and textured backsplashes are increasingly being incorporated into both kitchen and bathroom designs. In fact, over half of the NKBA 2024 Kitchen Trends survey participants believe that textured backsplashes will be trending over the next few years. Fluted stone tile backsplashes, 3D wave tile, and 3D mosaic tile backsplashes are especially popular right now.
